I’ve been working in the field since 2006 primarily as a programmer for the web. Although constantly exposed to designers and PSD files, I did not have a high interest to work in the design field. I simply didn’t have the patience to educate clients what’s possible and what is ridiculous. I began my career in the safe comfort of logic and functionality and it was good.
In the last 3 years it has become apparent to me that just as programmers struggle with design concepts, so do designers with functional and usability concepts. Knowing that I wasn’t a designer at heart, I took a larger interest in interaction design, wire-framing, prototyping and usability. These areas provided an avenue to test my understanding of user behaviour and what really works and what fails in the web world.
Today, I still find and pay designers to come up with concepts and design solutions to problems. I do however work closer with them and challenge them to provide a better experience for the user. Unfortunately, designers work in a 2D, flat, non-interactive environment and can’t easily see interaction design issues. Nor do they have a complete picture on the content that will fill their designs and how that could break them. My role in consulting, developing, testing and assisting in design has become an intricate part for success with my clients. I believe the website or application design for a project is perhaps the most valuable asset for a business. It helps set direction and bring all the stakeholders onto the same page for discussion. It is the most influential document (PSD) for affecting the future of a project.
In summary, I am a programmer with a talent for understanding the user. Most programmers are focused on the functional aspects alone as they never see the interface. I am not one of them. You’ll find that I have a unique skill set that is valuable across most, if not all areas of the development and planning processes.
